Worriors set Redstar Raceway alight with stellar performances at the final stop of the ROK Series

Worr Motorsport was represented by 3 drivers during the last weekend of racing for 2024. Qualifying set the standards with Lwashu Mathebula setting an improved time, Gianna Pascoal have a few struggles on track and Amani Kinyua driving a technical qualifying session in his first outing for Worr Motorsport.

Starting strong from tenth in a new category, Lwashu had formidable opposition in a 12 driver grid. A calm and collected race saw an avoidance of error in a field of experienced drivers gain him a position for race 2. Race 2 of 3 for the young Lwashu started in disaster with a kart oversteer leading to a cut during a highspeed formation lap. The race ending before it started bringing mechanic Sello to the pits to effect repairs and changes to the setup in time for the third and last race.

Lwashu started back in nineth as race 2 had more kart issues that saved his starting position. Staying within touching distance of the middle pack proved challenging for the worrior with an error from the leading pack promoting him temporarily by 2 positions until 4 laps remaining when sector 1 proved to be his demise. Both positions lost to cars from the front pack in a sweeping move as he tried a defensive maneuver to protect the inside line, the more experienced drivers took advantage of some understeer at corner 3 to gain position. Lwashu improved his top lap time to 59.04 but it was ultimately not enough to catch up to the middle pack finishing where he started, at P9. Lwashu’s Worr Motorsport Mechanic Sello was happy with the overall performance and shares the views of Coach Wesleigh in that he is one to watch.

“Gianna is very good. She beats the boys every weekend and will do so again today.” A prediction from Johnny – father of Gianna.

After a great performance in qualifying under strained conditions Gianna looked to start the first race of 3 with a good opening lap only to lose a position after the second corner to a brave dive by P3. She kept a pace 0.2 behind the 2 race leaders until an opening 2 laps later saw her being bullied out of contention for the win. She finished race 1 in P3.

Race 2 let her start in P1 because of a fast lap time but a limiter problem persisting on the straight meaning she was losing 0.1 and the lead in sector 1 of the opening lap. An improved cornering technique saw her regain the lead a lap later with an amazing inside move which saw the now former race leader close the gap only to crash into a following P3 car. Triumph in the second race meant she kept pole for the final race with setup changes affected to reduce the effects of the limiter.

Lap 2 of race 3 saw a composed drive after an unexpected loss of the lead on the second corner. The lose was short lived as 2 laps later excellent cornering saw a quicker acceleration to top end speed to take back the lead before corner 5. Perfect driving for the remainder of the race extended lead like the race 2 but with all 5 competitors on track. Daddy was right as she lifted the first-place trophy.

"limiter problem on the opening straight force him to take a braver approach to corners..."

Amani was under pressure to show a worrior spirit as he was 2 places behind World No.2 Ethan Lennon, 0.4 behind in pace. Like Lwashu race 1 (his first for Worr Motorsport) ended in disaster with a crash on the opening laps bending his crank shaft to force a retirement from the race. However, an incredible lap time ensured he start the second race of the day in pole.

Race 2 saw an identical limiter problem to Gianna on the opening straight force him to take a braver approach to corners to improve his overall lap times by 2 tenths. By L5 Amani had perfected sector 2 overtaking the lead car after corner 4. Composure in the lead saw him with a slight extension until L7 when he exited the last corner wide leading to some gravel on track, but it wasn’t enough to lose the lead.

The same adjustments as his team mate were made on his kart with a slight tweak to the setup for his comfort. The first lap with Ethan hot on his heels saw the last corner error repeat but with rejuvenated acceleration the OTK under him aided his bid to maintain the lead. L6 saw Amani with an extended lead with him looking comfortable 2sec ahead of the pack and by L9 the victory was all but secure 4.2sec ahead of Ethan in P2. The race ended with Amani P1 4.8sec ahead of Ethan in P2.

After the final race was completed stewards flagged Amani for jumping the start. To the disappointment of the worriors the decision stood, and he was penalised 5 seconds meaning a P2 finish after a completely dominant display. Overall Amani had done enough for a second-place finish.
